By Pie Tan Have you ever been in that certain point of your life where you've asked yourself, “What is my passion?”, “What is that specific thing that I would love to do?”, “What is that certain thing that would really make me happy?”. When I was 8 or 9 years old, my father would come to my room every 5 in the morning, hugged me and asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Without a second thought, I would always answer him, “To be a flight attendant because I want to see the world!” – That was my dream. That was the future I was planning for myself. Then eventually, it was all forgotten. When I was about to enter college, my first course choice was Mass Communication, second was Nursing as they were in demand. I took an entrance exam in 2 Universities for both courses and fortunately passed! On the enrolment day, I was with my friend who's enrolling for Bachelor of Science in Tourism, I accompanied him in the Hospitality Department for the course interview. Then he asked me, “Why don't you try the interview yourself to know if you would fit for the course? You’ve got nothing to lose anyway.” – Which I did! Then I went home, told my mom that I was already enrolled, but for the Tourism course! To make my long story short, I’ve got good grades, graduated and not long enough landed a job in a travel agency in Dubai. I did as well apply for a flight attendant position in Emirates Airlines, but unfortunately failed the ‘reach the overhead locker test’ because of my height! LOL! In my thought, in myself, that was the only way to fulfill my dream of travelling – if I’m not going to be a flight attendant, I won’t be able to see the world! My mind has set me limits on ways to materialize that thing which I really dreamed of doing. Then come March 2014, I decided to move here in Qatar, changed my career path, took a back-office role in a construction company and left the hospitality industry. There I met a lot of people who have been enjoying travelling though they were not working in a travel industry. From there on, I convinced myself to open that little hope left for my dream while having a full-time office job. So, I decided to take my first ever leisure trip to Jordan in 2015, followed by Georgia-Armenia, Hongkong-Macau trip in 2016 and eventually visited 10 European countries from 2018 and 2019, and still planning for more countries soon! Fellow members and guests, I’ve been in this dilemma whether to pursue what I always wanted to do or just stay in my comfort zone. You see, growing up trying to decipher what you want to do in life is never an easy stage. Not everyone gets to have that opportunity to fulfill their dreams, but if we choose to look beyond of what we can do, nothing is impossible! “All limits are self-imposed, and your only limit is you.” – Anonymous
